How to Tune a Snowboard

If you want to snowboard regularly, you’ll need to learn how to maintain your gear. Of course, major holes and damage usually need to be repaired at a shop. However, you can do a lot of smaller repair work and regular maintenance yourself at home. “Tuning” a snowboard means removing rust, filling in small chips and scratches, and waxing and polishing your board.

Edge Repair

The first step in tuning your snowboard at home is making edge repairs. To begin, place the board face down. Make sure it’s balanced on some type of elevated surface so that the board can lie flat without the bindings getting in the way. Inspect the edge of the board for any small nicks, scrapes or burrs. You can wipe the edge with a clean towel to clear away debris and get a better look. Run your diamond stone over the edge, applying even pressure and going from tip to tail. A diamond stone is a mild grit sanding tool specially made for smoothing out rough edges on snowboards and skis. The next step is to remove any small rust damage on the edge. To do this, run your gummy stone along the edges the same way you did with the diamond stone. After you’re done, clean away any metal shavings with a cloth and rubbing alcohol.

Base Repair

To repair deep gouges in the base of your board you’ll need to fill them with plastic. First, run a metal scraper over the surface of the base to make sure it’s clear. Next, light a p-tex candle so that the plastic becomes hot and drips. Move the dripping p-tex over any scratches so that it fills these areas. Since this involves burning plastic, you’ll want to make sure its done in a well-ventilated area. The plastic will dry quickly and once it does, you can run the scraper over the base again to remove any excess plastic. You may need to repeat this process more than once to completely fill some stubborn scratches.

Waxing Your Snowboard

To prepare your board for waxing, make sure its completely clean and free of burrs or debris. You can clean it with a towel and rubbing alcohol and use a wire or horsehair brush for more difficult areas. Heat your waxing iron until it is just warm enough to melt wax on contact. Hold the iron and wax bar above the board and allow the wax to drip in a zigzag pattern over the surface, moving slowly from tip to tail. After the board is coated, drag the iron across the surface to ensure the wax penetrates. You may need to repeat this process three or four times to make sure it’s sealed in. After the board has fully cooled, you can start polishing and removing excess wax.

To begin, pull your scraper across the surface at a 45 degree angle. Continue scraping in long overlapping strokes until no wax shavings are being removed with each pass. Next, brush the board with your bristle brush to remove more excess wax further smooth the surface. Congratulations, your board is now waxed and ready to ride!

Conclusion

It can be challenging to repair a board yourself for the first time. However, once you get the hang of this process it can be done much faster and in the long run. There’s a variety of online sites and snowboard stores that sell repair kits as well as individual tools like diamond stones and wax irons. Good luck!
