Should You Wear Polarized Ski Goggles?
If you’re new to winter sports it’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the information you’re expected to know. For instance, what are polarized ski goggles and when are you supposed to wear them?
The short answer is that polarized lenses have a special coating to reduce glare, which makes them great if you’re skiing over fresh white snow on bright sunny days. However, that doesn’t mean they’re perfect for all weather and light conditions. We’ve included the essential facts about polarized goggles here and some tips for when to wear them.
What are Polarized Ski Goggles?
Polarized lenses are treated with special chemicals that block reflected light. As light rays bounce off of objects, they enter the eye at an angle, creating glare. The chemical coating on polarized lenses acts like a window blind, blocking angled light while still allowing the wearer to look out.
Polarized treatments are very popular, and you can find them not just on ski goggles, but also on sunglasses, motorcycle visors and pretty much any other type of eye wear you can think of.
The Benefits of Polarization
This extra filter makes polarized ski goggles great for any situation where there’s a lot of light. On sunny days, snow readily reflects light and all the bright white snow and glare will definitely interfere with your vision. This effect is heightened if there’s a recent snowfall and the slope is undisturbed. The effect is also increased by high altitudes where the air is thinner and less light is filtered out by atmosphere. In short, ski slopes can be super reflective, and on sunny days polarized goggles aren’t just helpful but almost a necessity.
Some of the benefits of polarized lenses include:
- Reducing glare
- Enhancing contrast and improves visibility
- Reducing eye strain and discomfort
Any one of these positive benefits would be good, but to have all three makes a pretty compelling case for polarized lenses.
The Downsides of Polarized Ski Goggles
Of course, just because polarized goggles are sometimes beneficial doesn’t mean you should rely on them for every situation. Although polarization is great for helping you separate snow from different colored objects like trees or people, it won’t help you distinguish objects of similar color. When worn while skiing, it can make it hard to spot patches of ice on the snow. It can also worsen your depth perception in low light conditions and blend different objects together.
